- The FBI’s internet crime complaint center received 2385 complaints from victims of ransomware, with losses amounting to more than $34.3 million. This number is likely higher because not everyone reports their breaches.
- In 2021, ransomware attacks cost the US healthcare sector an estimated $7.8 billion in downtime alone. Over 19.7 million patient records were affected in 108 individual attacks during the year.

Ransomware is when a malicious program or protocol hijacks your important files, data, or emails and encrypts them so only the attacker knows how to access them. These important items are then not accessible to anybody else. Then a person or organization will receive a message that they need to pay some sort of Ransom to get those items back from the malicious actor.
How would I get Ransomware?
According to MicroTrends, 93% of Ransomware comes from phishing emails. These are emails that are received that spoof real looking emails and organizations, like Microsoft, Amazon, or banks. The purpose of these emails is to get you or your employees to download something that will infect your network.
