November 18, 2024
As you may have heard, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will discontinue free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, this doesn't mean your PC will stop working; it just means you'll be responsible for maintaining its security and efficiency.
If you've tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered compatibility issues, don't worry—there are still several options available to you:
- Ignore the Deadline: While not recommended, you can choose to continue using Windows 10 without updates. However, this leaves your system vulnerable to cyber threats and viruses, and you'll need to find alternative security measures. Additionally, the absence of technical support and updates could affect your computer's performance and operations.
- Switch to Linux: If you're tech-savvy and not ready to part with your PC, you can replace Windows 10 with a Linux operating system. Be prepared for potential challenges during the transition, and only opt for this if you're comfortable handling any issues that may arise.
- Upgrade via a Technical Workaround: If your PC failed the compatibility check for Windows 11, you might still be able to upgrade using a technical workaround. ZDNET provides a guide, but essentially, you can modify a registry setting and ensure your PC is configured to use Secure Boot with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Keep in mind that proceeding with this method may result in your PC not being supported or eligible for updates, and any compatibility issues won't be covered under warranty.
- Pay for Extended Security Updates (ESUs): Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 as a subscription service for up to three years. However, this option can be costly, with prices increasing each year. Business owners will pay $61 for the first year, $122 for the second, and $244 for the third. Educators receive a discounted rate, starting at $1 for the first year. Note that these updates do not include technical support and are designed to encourage users to upgrade to Windows 11.
- Purchase a New PC: If your current device is aging, buying a new PC compatible with Windows 11 might be a wise choice. New computers generally offer improved speed, security, and productivity. Remember to back up your data regularly to avoid losing important information during the transition.
Before making a decision, consider these options carefully to determine the best course of action for your needs.
